In the 70s, African football was beginning to bloom, being Zaire (current Democratic Republic of Congo) one of the teams that stood out. After winning the African Cup in 1968 and 1974 and being runner-up in 1972, their presence in the 1974 World Cup became a reality.
They had to deal with qualifying first. After thrashing Togo and defeating Cameroon with difficulty, they walked over Ghana, Zambia and Morocco. Zaire had won a place in Germany. The dream was made true. For the first time, a team from "black Africa" would attend a World Cup.
