The 1982 World Cup held in Spain, was played in no less than 17 venues. Although once again the teams were divided into six groups of four, the semi-final knock-out matches were reinstated. It is considered one of the best World championships, due to the players who attended.
Italy hardly managed to qualify, as they couldn't get beyond a draw in their matches against Poland, Peru and Cameroon. The goal difference saved the Italians from going home early. In the second round, Italy ended up in the "group of death" with Argentina and Brazil. However, the Italians defeated both the world champion and the favourite.
