After winning bronze at the 1964 Olympic Games and failing to qualify in 1968, the football team of the German Democratic Republic was ready to play the 1972 Games held in Munich, West Germany.
On August 28, the DDR debuted thrashing Ghana 4-0 and then Colombia. In the last match of the first phase, they were defeated by the favorite and eventual champions of the tournament, Poland.
After the first phase, the GDR suffered an unexpected defeat against Hungary, forcing the East Germans to win their next two matches if they wanted to opt to a medal. The next game was against Mexico, whom they beat 7-1. The final match against the Federal Republic of Germany would decide who aspired to the second place in the group, and before 80,000 people in Munich's Olympic stadium, the GDR won 3-2.
