Belgium was chosen to host the fourth edition of the European Championship. As on previous occasions, only the semi-finals, the final and the match for the third place would be played in the host country.
The qualifying rounds were completed in May 1972, a month before the beginning of the tournament. The Belgian national team started against Denmark, who fell easily under a double score by Devrindt. Following the thrashing of Scotland 3-0, Belgium also defeated Portugal's Eusebio with ease, to everyone's surprise. After defeating Denmark again and losing in Scotland, the pass to the quarterfinals was decided in Portugal. Belgium could afford to lose by less than three goals, but they managed to tie.
