Paris Saint-Germain was established on August 12, 1970, through the merger of Paris FC and Stade Saint-Germain. Eleven days after, they would draw their debut match in the French Second Division, 1-1. PSG finished their first season champion of D2, thus ascending to the top flight.
However, the Administration of the city of Paris, primary funder of the club, refused to support a team based outside the capital. Their existence threatened, the PSG split in May 1972. The Professional section remained in D1 under the name Paris FC, while the rest of the team was relegated to D3 retaining the name of Paris Saint-Germain.
