The Belgian national team is one of the oldest in Europe. They failed to qualify for the 1958 World Cup as they were eliminated by France, but they made it in 1954, to fall in the group stage against England, Italy and Switzerland.
Like other big European teams such as the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy and England, they refused to participate in the first European Championship in 1960, as they consider that the tournament overlapped with their football calendar and that real professional football did not exist by then.
The Belgian national team continued to linking one defeat after the other in the 1962 World Cup qualifying (against Switzerland, Sweden) and even in friendlies against the Netherlands, its closest rival.
