The goalkeeper position was never the same after him. Many of the techniques used today by goalkeepers throughout the world were established by Yashin. He dressed in black to pass unnoticed by the forward players and was the first keeper to use gloves. He was among the first to play regularly with his feet, both inside and outside the area and one of the first goalkeepers of powerful constitution and stature.
During his time, the Soviet team attained their greatest glories: Gold medal in the Olympic Games of Melbourne '56, European Cup in France '60 and, above all, three brilliant participations in the World Cups of Sweden '58, Chile '62 — paid with two separate places in the quarter finals — and England 66, the best historical record of the USSR, a fourth position.
