HISTORY

In 1956, in order to increase the hopes of the supporters to win the title, the Swedish Federation lifted the ban that kept Swedish professional players from the national team. Sweden was the host country to the 1958 World Cup, and shared the group stage with Mexico, Hungary and Wales.

The Swedes won the quarter-final 2-0 against the Soviet Union, who played in a World Cup for the first time. The semi-final against Germany, a especially violent match, ended with a 1-3 for the hosts.

Sweden had already acomplished a historic feat by reaching the final against Brazil. Three minutes after the kick-off, Liedholm opened the scoring for the hosts, thus generating an overwhelming joy in the local audience.
