In June 1947, not too far from the end of World War II yet, Helsinki was granted the hosting of the 1952 Olympics.
The opening ceremony took place on July 19 at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. Brazil arrived still severely affected by the "Maracanazo" in the 1950 World Cup, but completely renovated and, for the first time, wearing the yellow shirt that would earn them the name "Canarinha". Helsinki also marked the discovery of one of the Brazilian myths, Vavá. On July 16 Brazil began the tournament playing against the Netherlands, whom they defeated 5-1. In the second round they won again, against Luxembourg, but this time the victory was tight: 2-1.
