After almost 50 years in which football was played casually in the port area, the owner of the local brewery, John Brickwood, along with Frank Brettell, founded Portsmouth FC. It supposed the origin of a great rivalry with the other great port city in southern England, Southampton, and they play each other for most of the so-called Southern Leagues.
After years of small local triumphs, in 1927, Portsmouth achieved the promotion to the First Division. Soon came success in the form of three finals of the FA Cup, which they would eventually win for the first time in 1939.
