The 1930 World Cup was the first organized by FIFA. It was held in Uruguay between 13 and 30 July 1930 due to Uruguay's victory at the 1928 Olympics (the World Cup’s predecessor) and because the country’s independence centennial in July that year, among other reasons,.
Europe was still emerging from the First World War and some of Old World great powers (England, Italy, Austria, Germany, Spain) refused to make the arduous, several weeks liner’s journey. In the end, 13 national teams participated. The first two games in the history of the World Cup were played simultaneously on 13 July: the United States beat Belgium 3-0, and France defeated Mexico 4-1.
