The origin of the club dates back to 1880, when members of the Church of St. Mark’s, who worked in an iron factory in the east of Manchester, founded the St. Mark’s. In 1887 the club moved to a new field in Hyde Road and was renamed Ardwick AFC to reflect its new location. The Ardwick joined the English Football League as founding member of the Second Division in 1892. Financial troubles in the 1893-94 season led to perform a complete restructuring of the institution, to be renamed Manchester City Football Club.
